Very well done fanfic. It could be canon. Got mistyeyed during Thomas's soulgaze interaction with Maggie.

Absolutely wonderful take on what Thomas sees in his soulgaze with Harry.

I love how you've connected Thomas revealing himself to Harry with Justine's 'death.' Very poignant, and a perfectly logical reason why he would do so.

Wow, I love it.

We've been missing new Dresden fics for a while now (at least where I can find it) - big ups for the challenge!

Also loved the Soul Gaze thing... It's one of my pet peeves that we never find out what happens when other people look into Harry's eyes. (no offense, but this seems a little short of being enough to cause people to faint ;) ) - also love the Murph reference... I just wish we got more of a picture of Thomas's opinion of Murph.

constructive criticism follows.... keep up the good work....
Though the tone here is perfect for traditional Dresden fics, it seems waaaay brighter than what we see in 'Backup' (at least in my opinion) - Thomas's narrative is way more Emo/Traditional Angsty Conflicted Vampire in 'Backup' - at least imho.

Author's Response: Thanks for such a thorough review! I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

As for the soulgaze, it's been established that different people see different things when they soulgaze. For example, Jim has said that Ramirez doesn't "see" a person's soul; he "hears" it as music. I don't think something on the level of what Thomas saw would make Agent Denton flip out and scream "I don't believe in hell!", but it could certainly attract a teenage girl who already considered Harry her hero, making her see he was "lonely" and "tired," and it could convince a man like Michael that Harry had a good heart. For Susan, I think her fainting spell was more a result of the fact that the soulgaze worked at all. Most likely, it was one of her first genuine supernatural experiences, and that has to be something of a shock. I don't think she saw anything terrible, as what she saw didn't deter her from asking him out on a date!

As for the tone, I think a hefty percentage of the angst we see in "Backup" originated from what he did to Justine in BR. Though it's part facade, he appears much more happy-go-lucky in the earlier books, where most of this fic takes place. And "Backup" states that Thomas hasn't been involved in the You Know What (don't want to expose review-readers to spoilers!) since shortly before "Grave Peril," so that removes a significant source of angsty conflict right off the bat. While I let the Epilogue just be pure brotherly goofiness (Thomas has to look out for his little brother's well being, after all), I think the rest of the fic accurately reflects what Thomas' Angst Index would read at those given times. Actually, when I was writing this, I worried that the amount of angst I was writing would be off-putting to readers! Glad I wasn't as close to toeing the line as I imagined.

Thanks again for your kind words and your constructive criticism! I appreciate your perspective.

very cute story. the snapshots are very safe and comfortable; it's good to see some more of thomas.

the 'It's My Birthday, Too' spoiler -- is that the 'Hungry Hungry Hippos'. I admit to only reading that short once, but i believe the intended gift was 'rock 'em sock 'em robots'.

Author's Response: WOW, talk about a brain fart! Jim needs to revoke my beta license. Thanks so much for pointing out my error! It's now fixed.

I love you. I love you. OMG. I love you.
This is so amazing!
Chapter by chapter: I love that Thomas finds out about Harry from looking for his mother. It's a great little realistic touch. Thomas's scenes with Justine are so heartbreaking, and his conversation with Susan is perfectly in-character and a great fill-in-the-blank. Chapter seven is just, argh, it's heartbreaking and gorgeously written and amazing and ow and wow, I'm so amazed by it.
Chapter eight gets a paragraph all its own. I know I gushed already, but oh my God, Pris. It's so well-written and so in-character, so hurting and so loving and so oddly joyful at the end. I love that Thomas gets a chance to see his mother again, I love that he forgives her, I love that he understands that he has support now, in Harry. I love the soulgaze, by the by; it's fabulous imagery and well-chosen for Harry. I especially love the idea of the lampposts. That was very well done. Oh my God, Pris. Oh my God, I cried a lot, but the shenanigans at the end made me laugh through my tears. I don't think I can favorite this piece enough. Wow. So much love and wow and amazing.
