WalkScore.com calculates a "walkability" score for a neighborhood based on density, proximity to restaurants, parks and public spaces, and schools, access to public transportation, etc. My New York apartment got a glowing 98 out of 100! How wonderfully walkable! Though I feel its walkability is somewhat impaired by the fact I live across the street from housing projects and probably shouldn't walk around at night. XD

Right, don't walk around at night and when you walk around during the day keep the safety off on your Kalisnokov.

Go figure. XOXOXO, Dad
Part of the message above got erased. The fourth line should have read...site, received a paltry 72 rating.
I got a 3 out of 100 for my house. LOL! I'm hoping my future NY apt will score just a tad better than that.
I think Walk Score is a service that can be especially useful for those who are going to buy a house but havent chosen the region yet. I ve tried but my score was rather low, about 25. But how often do we walk nowadays? People go by car much more often i think. At http://drivescore.fizber.com/it is possible to get your drive score and see how close establishments are by car. I ve tried and this time my results were much better.
Thanks for the article. That's really cool.

And thanks to Chris for one more link. I've spent about an hour entering different home addresses and estimating their walkscore and Drivescore. BTW you can use one more score there - Bikescore Title cartoon by Bruce Eric Kaplan, used without permission. |
