MOVIEVERSE NIGHTCRAWLER

[ Photos ]

The Top: $8 from a thrift store. I did a lot of shopping in thrift stores (Philadelphia is full of them!) for this costume, and this light brown jacket came the closest to the leather vest Alan wears in the film. I knew I could always chop the sleeves off for accuracy, but decided to keep them in the event of cold weather.

The Pants: $10 from DEB (King of Prussia mall, outside Philadelphia). The brand is "I Love You." I must have visited every single clothing shop in that entire mall, and these came the closest. They're still quite different from the movie pants, but they fit me well and they were inexpensive, so why not?

The Jacket: This I already had in my posession. It's a Calvin Klein coat I received last Christmas. How handy! If it had been a less expensive coat, I would have considered adding the little shiny things -- maybe beads of clear or black nail polish?

The Tail: I love you, mom. :D Lightweight, slate-blue, cotton fabric, stuffed with ordinary stuffing and plastic "boning" to give it shape, cut from an original pattern. The tip was shaped with cardboard.

The Feet: Probably my most inspired aspect of the costume! I took a pair of overlarge $1 slippers (from a thrift mart), cut off the tops, cut a large groove in the sole (for the two toes) and put them at the bottom of a pair of blue opaque tights ($5). This way, it looked like I was walking around barefoot, with oddly shaped blue feet! Fun! For added verisimilitude, I got a pack of fake nails ($6 for a 100-nail assortment at CVS, as I needed ten large nails for the four toenails and six fingernails) and glued them on the toes.
In sum:

Step 1: Take a big pair of gentleman's slippers, aquired for $1, and chop off the top with a big knife.
Step 2: See how well they fit against your feet, with a chunk on the end for his signature third toe. Find where you want the toe division to be: between your second and third toes, or between your big toe and the rest of the piggies.
Step 3: Slice into it, leaving a wide gap.
Step 4: Put the sole at the bottom of a pair of blue tights (preferably a size or two too large for you), and then put your foot in. It's really difficult to get them both in at the same time. Don the tights and be fabulous.
Step 5: Add stripey pants and you're done! Mess around with the tights until the toes don't look silly and wrinkled.
Optional Step 6: Double up the blue tights with a black pair so that the color is darker.

Now you can walk around with the knowledge that you will not cut your foot on broken glass and bleed to death, but still look barefoot to someone far enough away from you!
The Rosary: $10 from TraditionalCatholicGoods.com. I had quite a tough time finding a rosary long enough that was still inexpensive and resembled the Kurt's. I gave up on finding an accurate cross, as Dana Schnieder (who designed Kurt's rosary, as well as the rest of the jewelery in the movie) wasn't doing cosplayers any favors. I went to a bunch of Catholic goods websites, eventually deciding on two of the black Opaque Bead Rosary ($5 each), which I linked together with a modified paper clip to encircle my waist. The length was eerily perfect!

The Makeup:
  1. I first applied the ears ("Woochie" Large Space Ears Tips, $10). These can easily be found on the internet, but I was worried about them not arriving in time, so I went to a costume shop instead. I used Ben Nye Prosthetic Adhesive, which was recommended to me by an employee.
  2. Next, I applied blue eyeshadow to my eye area, the inside of my ears, my hairline, and the bottom of my nose. I recommend using a shade slightly darker than the rest of the makeup to enhance a sort of shadowy effect and make blending easier.
  3. Now the crazy part! I painted my face with blue liquid latex body paint. I googled "blue body paint," and humorously enough, my best bet came from a porn site. The shipping was fast, and the huge tub of paint was well worth the $12 value. In its liquid state, it looks sky blue, but it dries darker. I did a total of three coats of the latex. Note: Make sure you apply a layer of water-based moisturizer beforehand, or it'll be painful to take off afterwards. To seal the latex to that it doesn't stick to itself, they recommend water-based polish or two other products they sell from the website, but I just rubbed in some baby powder (be careful not to inhale any!), and the result was a lovely slate-blue color. However, after a few hours, the color had changed to a rich royal blue color. Lovely!
  4. I sprayed my hair black, using Midnight Black "Streaks N' Tips Temporary Hilight Spray" ($4, Sally's Beauty Supply). A bit messy (every time I touched my hair, my fingers came back speckled with black, but it didn't rub off on my clothes), but effective.
  5. Using the blue eyeshadow and a slate blue eyebrow pencil (Sally's Beauty Supply), I blended the hairline, eye area, ear area, etc.
  6. I was running low on time, so instead of painting on the scars with acrylic paint, I drew them in with the eyebrow pencil. This is the best reference I've found.
  7. As for the hands, they ended up being a rush job. I got my roommate to help out so that I could do both hands at once. I rubber-banded my fingers together, which turned out to be a bad idea, as they started cutting off circulation, despite me trying this several times before and having no trouble. I wish I'd known about Finger Cots at the time! Ot maybe I could have found extra large latex gloves and cut out the fingers. Oh well.
Going Further: To enhance the effect, you might consider wearing colored contact lenses. As they tend to be expensive and I've never worn contacts, I decided not to, but if you want to go all out, you might want to investigate! Also, you might consider fangs. Have fun!

SALLY

The Wig: The wig was bought off eBay. It's a cheap, rough, synthetic fiber that mimics the quality of Sally's hair a lot better than a more expensive wig would.

The Dress: I found a cheap beige linen dress in my size at a thrift store and trimmed the sleeves and neckline to suit Sally's style. Next, I bought a bunch of small fabric pieces that roughly approximated the color of Sally's dress, though I made mine a bit brighter just for fun. I pinned the fabric swatches in place, marked the seams, and sewed them into the base dress. You can see the base dress in the swirly panel and at the bottom edge. I painted some of the panels to add variety. Finally, I added the stitches with black yarn.

The Makeup: The stitches are black eyeliner. I wussed out and decided not to go with the white body paint.

PROFESSOR TRELAWNEY

[ Photos '05 | Photos '07 ]

This is probably the costume that took the least amount of effort, but it's nevertheless one of my favourites. Trelawney is so much fun to play! In '05, I won the Costume Contest. In '07, people over the age of 17 weren't allowed to enter the costume contest. However, working the main events at the Union Square B&N were four fantastic individuals, dressed as Hogwarts professors. I don't know if they worked for the bookstore or if they were hired actors, but whoever they were, they were AMAZING, and they really knew their stuff! I was so impressed with them. Several people actually asked me if I was the "official" Trelawney, which made my day!

MOLLY CARPENTER

Molly was, quite simply, a rush job. I put everything together in two weekends, which as any cosplayer will tell you, is laughable. The costume had so much potential, but I blew it, and I look forward to trying again when I really have the time to devote to getting it right!

The Wig: Never listen to the lady I listened to when I bought my wig! She assured me I could bleach the auburn wig she sold me to platinum blonde because it was human hair, and though I was skeptical, I believed her. That was stupid of me. I bleached it three times, and I ended up with a reddish-orangish color that served as an awful base color for the dye job. I ended up keeping half the wig that base color, then dyed the other half with the blue SFX dye I'd already bought. The result was closer to red/purple than cotton candy pink/blue. Ugh. Next time, I'm going to start with a white wig.

The Shirt: The one part of the costume I'm pleased with! I designed the logo in Photoshop, printed it onto a piece of paper, and tacked the paper onto a piece of cardboard using rubber cement. Using an X-Acto knife, I painstakingly made a stencil from the cardboard. A few hours of work later, I taped the stencil to the shirt and painted it with 2+ coats of brick red fabric paint, then went back afterwards and painted in the "gaps" from the stencil. The folks at the Jim-Butcher.com forums loved the design so much that the webmaster contacted me and asked if he could use my design for the official merchandise. Huzzah! Now, you can buy your own SPLATTERCON!!! shirt at CafePress.

MAEVE

The Wig:
  1. The base wig is Ivy in white from CosWorx.com. I also discovered the joy of wig caps, which make things soooo much easier when your hair is as long as mine!
  2. I dyed the wig with a faint blue-green glow using this recipe, though the subtle streaking ended up being imperceptible when I dreaded it. Drat.
  3. I backcombed small, irregular-sized snatches of hair at a time into dreadlocks, a process that took hours! At the temples, I paid special attention to the direction I wanted some of the dreads to go. This made the buns a lot easier to manage!
  4. As the dreading process revealed the gaps in the wig mesh, I filled in the holes by adding wool extensions in two or four-strand chunks. I attached them to the mesh using miniature zip ties, purchased at Radio Shack. The extensions are a mix of Colinette Mohair and Point 5 wool in a variety of colors--I picked Jay, Lagoon, Banwy, and Gaugin. Looking back, I wish I had more white represented, and the rich blue Salty Dog would have been lovely. I bought all the wool off eBay, as Colinette is very difficult to find in the US for any reasonable price.
  5. I styled the wig into the pigtail buns and pinned them in place with bobby pins. As the tails weren't as thick as I'd like, I added more wool extensions.
The Tiara: I found the tiara in a bargain bin at a beading/trimming/ribbon shop. It was surrounded a selection of equally tacky tiaras, probably intended for Daddy's Little Princess's quinceanera. A bunch of them actually had a "15" in rhinestones. I love it!

The Makeup: The Wrap: A $5 ice-blue pashmina from a street vendor in New York's Chinatown. You would not believe how difficult it is to find a pashmina that doesn't have a floral motif! I safety-pinned it to a bra in strategic locations, accenting it with a snowflake brooch I found on eBay for a dollar.

The Skirt: Blue camo, $10 from Galaxy Army Navy. Because Maeve likes to wear lace-up pants, I bought a second skirt a size too small for me, cut the seams, and started installing grommets so I could lace it up on the sides. However, I ran out of time, so I decided the non-laced version was perfectly adequate. Plus, the non-laced version works better with the fishnet tights!

The Shoes: I've yet to decide between my knee-high lace-up Docs and a pair of utterly ridiculous 6" platform heels (making me 6'3"), clear plastic with sparkly green accents, purchased for $5 at a random discount shoe store on 14th Street. I'm amazed I can walk in them, but MAN do I feel like a queen of Winter when I'm tromping around in them.

Accessories: Dark blue nail polish with silver French tips. Black fishnet gloves OR ice-blue opera gloves. I have yet to decide. Maybe I'll do one of both! White fishnet tights.
